This 7” is from a 4-piece I’ve never heard before called Something Men apparently out of the UK. This meets somewhere between French garage and Canadian country punk (So still maybe French?). Some Black Lips worship, Demons Claws vocal stylings, Weakends vibrato…Would fit nicely on Rob’s House. 2 tracks. The A-Side, “Birdy Roof” is more generic and almost wanky at certain points – it definitely feels like you’ve heard the riff before…cuz I’m sure they aped this from some AM radio country ballad. Vocals are nasally at best. But never fear! The B-Side, “Mud Brown Mistress”, is the winner here! I always like when these country punk bands get garageier and feel like they can steal “Gloria” instead of some lesser generic pop jamming. I can’t lie, musically the verse IS “Gloria”, but the vocal melody is different (still sounding like Jeff Clarke…). The chorus is the real reason to hear the jam – the “Gloria” coping stops there, and once you hear the noisey solo you’ll be sold. Not too many “correct” notes being stomped on during this solo, which is a nice change of pace after what I would call a sterile A-Side. Maybe could qualify as punk at times, but not sure if it fits entirely in with the current crop of true to form punk bands. Pretty decent single. Nothing that will make you stop buying Demons Claws in favor of Something Men records, but I think the B-Side will receive a few extended plays over the next few weeks/months on my table. This is the first release on the EZPZ label based in Germany. They appear to have the Kind Turkey Approved Black Mamba Beat on their rooster as well. It looks like a 12” EP by them is either out now or on the way soon. Here’s to hoping they mail me a copy of that for review. Could be a stellar start to a new label.
